Layng Hopes to Repeat History

By Brian Fees

The Daily Review - Towanda

Throughout the years this area has been known for some great pole vaulters. From Sam Fairchild to Kurt Dunn the region has had state champions in the event in the past.

These days Timmy Layng is one of a new group of vaulters who are establishing this area as one of the best around in the event. A year ago Layng brought home a bronze medal at the PIAA meet.

Now the crowds have turned out every time the state medalist gets ready to pole vault.

“It’s definitely cool to have all the attention, but it can get overwhelming,” he said. “Last year I was kind of the underdog, now everyone knows who I am, the whole town wants to see me.”

That’s one of the things that comes with returning as a state medalist and holding the school record in the event at 14-feet, 9-inches.

“A state title is probably the number one goal and number two is the district record, which is 14-feet, 7-inches,” Layng said. “Last year I set my sights on that and this year I think I can do it and that would place me real well for states.”

GOLDEN GIRL SCHAFFER RULES AT PENN

Friday, April 25, 2008
By BRUCE BURATTI
The Express-Times

PHILADELPHIA | Abby Schaffer is completing her final laps at Easton Area High School, repeating as individual champion in her specialty event at the University of Pennsylvania.

Schaffer repeated in the high school girls pole vault, setting a meet record in the process. Schaffer broke former Easton teammate Lindsay Regan's Penn Relays mark twice.

She made 12-8 on her second attempt, breaking Regan's record of 12-7½ in 2006, then made 13-1 on her third attempt at that height.

"The experience of winning last year made me less nervous this time," said Schaffer, also the defending PIAA Class AAA champion who added more than six inches to her outdoor personal best. "I felt real good and when I miss at a height I don't panic like I did when I was younger."

Tori Worthen of Council Rock South was second and Chrissy Finkel of Montville (N.J.), who lost to Schaffer last year on misses, was third. Nicole Pompei of Hanover Park (N.J.) was fourth. All cleared 12-0.

WORTHEN OF PRAISE

By KEVIN COONEY
Bucks County Courier Times
April 25th, 2008

2008 Penn Relays: The initial nerves that Tori Worthen felt last year before her first trip to “The Carnival” were still there when Thursday morning arrived.

“This is such a huge meet, so I think it was natural to have them,” said Worthen, a junior at Council Rock-South. “Really, it was just a lot of excitement that I was feeling in getting back out there and having the chance to participate.”

By 4 o'clock, those nervous knots had turned into huge smiles of satisfaction after a job well done.

Worthen took home the silver medal in the high school girls pole vault competition on “Ladies Day” at the 114th Penn Relays before a sun-splashed crowd at Franklin Field.
