Canino Goes High... Again

June 12, 2004
Another day, another Princeton All-American. Yesterday Emily Kroshus earned that status in the 10,000-meter run and today it was senior pole vaulter Chelo Canino, who finished sixth at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas. Canino cleared 13-5 1/4, one of four vaulters to do so, but she took sixth alone based on misses. UCLA sophomore Chelsea Johnson won the event by clearing 14-1 1/4. Canino had cleared 13-5 3/4 in Florida two weeks ago, establishing a new all-time Ivy best and winning the regionals at the same time. Can Princeton's Chelo Canino go higher?

She may not need to. Canino cleared 13-5 3/4 in the pole vault in Florida two weeks ago, establishing a new all-time Ivy best and winning the regionals at the same time. The best vault in the prelims at NCAAs last year was 13-1 1/2. If Canino can go in the neighborhood of her new personal-best, you can expect to see her in Friday's final. The winning mark in the finals will most likely be higher than 13-5. |
