Hunterdon County Democrat Hunterdon Central's Tara Oberg led the way in the vault this winter. The Red Devil junior increased her personal record to 11-0 at the New Jersey Varsity Classic at the Armory on Feb. 7, and equaled it at the NJSIAA all-groups Meet of Champions (where she placed fourth) at Jadwin Gym on Feb. 27. On the boys' side this winter, Voorhees' Brad Lawrence has emerged. The Viking senior improved his PR to 14-3, and placed second in Group 2 with 14-0. He no-heighted at the MOC, but came back to clear 13-6 for seventh at Easterns. He's also made the field for nationals (13-6 or better), and will jump in the trials on Saturday (2 p.m.) with hopes of advancing to the finals on Sunday (noon). Elsewhere on the collegiate scene, North grad Keely Marsh continues to vault as a Brown freshman this winter. Marsh, who cleared 11-0 for second place at sectionals and then made 10-6 at groups (fourth) and the MOC (ninth) last spring, got over 11-1 3/4 at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships at Harvard on Feb. 26. The clearance tied her for 11th place (the winning height was 12-5 1/2). The Skyland Conference has been especially successful in girls' vaulting this winter. Three of the top four places at the MOC went to conference girls, and three of the top five at Easterns were from the Skyland (Hillsborough junior Robin Friedman, second, 11-6; Watchung Hills senior Lauren Chun, tied for third, 11-0; and Oberg). Warren Hills junior Kristen Hafford, the MOC winner (11-6), didn't compete at Easterns. |
