Quakertown's Kihm Shines, Sets Meet Record in Vault

The Morning Call

It was a long night for Christine Kihm.

She arrived at Wissahickon High School for the 29th annual Trojan Track Classic at 4 p.m. with the rest of her Quakertown High team.

After finding out that the girls pole vault would not begin until after the boys event was completed, Kihm huddled under a blanket to stay warm on the blustery evening.

Five hours later, she was able to make her first vault.

The wait didn't matter as she won the event with a meet-record height of 10-9. Kihm's effort highlighted an impressive night for Quakertown.

''I hit 11-3 on Tuesday against Souderton,'' said Kihm. ''I tried the pole vault when I was a sophomore, but we really didn't get a coach for the event until I was a junior. That's really when I started to get going.''

Despite her limited experience, Kihm, now a senior, has quickly established herself as the premier pole vaulter in the Surburban One League, but she has even higher aspirations.

''My initial goal that I set back in indoor was to get 12 feet by the end of the year and qualify for nationals,'' she said. ''I am a little bit behind schedule of where I wanted to be.''

Still, even with just a few meets left in the season, she is confident. ''I can make good progress in the next couple of weeks because I know what I need to do,'' Kihm said.

''I need a little more strength and a little more form at the top of the vault. If I fix exactly what I want to fix, then 12 feet is very attainable.''
