DOYLESTOWN — After brief conferences with her pole vault coach, diminutive Council Rock-South sophomore Tory Worthen used a different pole and successfully cleared the bar.

As she completed her landing and fell backwards into the padding she exalted “Yes!” and was met by her pole vault coach, her father, Ken Worthen, who gave her a bear hug. An attempt later Worthen would push things again, clearing 11-4, a personal record and a stadium record.

Worthen and teammate Nina Brocavich captured the pole vault title at the C.B. West Relays by shattering the meet record on Saturday.

“At the higher heights I started doing even better,” said Worthen, who stands just 5-foot-2 and barely 100 pounds. “After this I'm really feeling confident now.”

Prior to her successful attempt of 11-6 Tory switched to a 12-120 pole as opposed to her 12-110.

“Just two weeks ago is when I started to using the newer one. [Saturday] I figured I had to try and use it.”

Chances are Worthen will continue using it next week at the Penn Relays.
