HAMPSTEAD -- In Jess Huber’s mind, she’s still a pole vaulter that struggles to clear 9 feet 6 inches.

In reality, the North Carroll junior is way past that.

Huber takes her personal record of 10-06 into today’s county track and field meet, where she’s the likely favorite to win a gold medal. The height is also a school record, and as of Monday it was the top mark in the state.

Huber started the year with a goal of reaching 11 feet, and she went through the indoor track season racking up gold medals — she won a 3A-2A state title, her second straight crown. Last week, at the Chesapeake Conference meet, Huber defended her crown by reaching 10-06.
